Vision, Scope and Aims

Vision

"Disseminating knowledge to comprehensive, high-quality sex education."

Scope

The IJSSE is a double-blind, peer-reviewed, fully open-access journal providing an advanced platform for sexuality education-related research outputs. The editorial board welcomes empirical, conceptual, academic, and theoretical articles that are critically analysed and interpreted within their holistic approaches to sexuality education.

The IJSSE approaches manuscripts related to the operational guidance for comprehensive sexuality education. The journal covers the following thematic areas, including but not limited to:

  • Comprehensive sexuality education: Values and human rights as a core component, including consent and decision-making, sexual coercion, intimate-partner and gender-based violence, and sexual diversity.
  • Human development: The body, puberty, and reproduction; relationships, communication, and decision-making.
  • Sexual health: STIs/HIV and AIDS, unintended pregnancy, condoms, contraception, and how to access health and other support services.
  • Gender studies: Gender norms and gender equality as a stand-alone topic and infused across other comprehensive sexuality education topics.
  • Safe and healthy learning environments: Efforts to keep girls in school and to promote an egalitarian learning environment.
  • Participatory teaching approaches: Effective approaches that help learners personalise information and strengthen communication, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Youth advocacy and civic engagement: Programme design empowering learners beyond the curriculum as agents in their own lives and community leaders.
  • Cultural appropriateness: Content tailored for distinct subpopulations and cultural contexts.

Aims

The IJSSE aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, publishing professionals, librarians, and others to communicate original research that addresses current issues informed by best practices. The journal supports responsible research and innovation, embracing the globalisation of research, the inclusion of new or previously excluded stakeholders, and the principles of open science. The focus of the IJSSE is not limited to any specific method of inquiry or analysis, whether quantitative, qualitative, empirical, or rational.
